This look is not new but this film is one of the better ones. It’s because of the subject and the post work. Many scenes didn’t even look like NY to me so that held my interest.
The end result is better than other films of this nature because of the post work done. Making the piece more of a post-production exercise than a photographic one. Sam O’Hare, the creator, shot without a tilt-shift lens. This allowed him control over the blurring. Masks were made for the tops of buildings before blurring the scene which is why it looks more like a real miniature world. He also did the camera moves in post after the blurring. If you did that with a TS lens, the blur would move with the camera and the effect is lost.
A couple notes: the small pans are quite effective but would have been cool if they were faster and natural. Like a real-time hand-held shot; also, I would have slowed the film speed a little more to help with the illusion, especially the scenes with rippling water.
Overall this is very convincing and compelling, especially if you haven’t seen this effect before. The indi-sounding music helps greatly… surprisingly was manufactured at Human.
